Almost two decades ago, Cherry de la Torre, a Canadian mother of Filipino descent, wrote the first draft of “The Cashew Nut Wish” after Christian, her three-year-old son of Filipino-Caribbean heritage, came home upset after being bullied. A few children his age had refused to play with him because of his big hair. The Legend of the Cashew Nut from the Philippines is incorporated into this original story set in High Park, Toronto. Co-author Christian lends his writer’s voice when as a result of being bullied he makes a wish which his mother dubbed a “cashew nut wish.” Hence this book was born.

This is a heartwarming tale, told by a mother to her child, about embracing his YOU-niqueness, rather than wishing to look like or be someone else. Mom demonstrates to her son, by way of telling an ancient mythological tale, that when a wish is granted, it may not have a desired outcome, and that a better alternative is to be oneself. I highly recommend this book for adults and children.
