Nuts are perhaps the original health food, the main source of nutrition for many animals, and as apparently basic as food gets. Taking us on a gastronomic, botanical and cultural tour of nuts around the world, Nuts is the first book of its kind about this foodstuff, crammed with surprising and little-known facts. As allergy sufferers will know, nuts get almost everywhere, being used industrially, in confectionary and in all sorts of cooking – Nuts gives us the full story, through cultivation, harvesting, processing, and consumption.
Ken Albala, author of many books on food, immerses us in the modern-day uses of the nut, providing a comprehensive account of how it has been cooked, prepared, and exploited around the globe, while simultaneously discussing the social and cultural meaning of nuts during various periods in history. No stone is left unturned in this spirited account of the oldest and most natural food on earth.
Written for a general audience, this tidy volume is stuffed with tidbits and fascinating nuggets about the humble nut, and comes complete with recipes to try out for nut-lovers. Whether interested in nuts, or just food generally, the remarkable story of how a simple, primal food came to such popular and varied use is sure to entertain and inform in equal measure.

No, the title is not a joke, this is a fast and fairly entertaining read.
The title sounds like a joke, but this short book is a good read, is nicely illustrated and written, and has lots of information about, well, nuts. It’s not quite as well-written as others in this series, but is an easy and entertaining read.Chapter titles will give you a sense of what is covered: What is a nut?; Nuts to chew; Nuts in cookery; Nuts familiar and exotic; Nuts in sweets, snacks and junk food; The modern industry. Many kinds of nuts are discussed, as are different cuisines. Nuts are in more cusines more ways that I had known. Pistachios, cashews, all here. Marketing, branding and related are discussed. There’s a bit less of art and culture than is usual in the series. It has the usual section of recipes at the end.

I cannot stop reading books written by Ken Albala. The first time I got hooked was when I read his book about beans so religiously that I read the book instantly. From then on, this author is written on my head when it comes to learning about food history. He does incredible research, he is so knowledgeable, he doesn’t leave a corner of information behind like a good cleaner who doesn’t leave a corner of dust undone in the house. Not only this but he is actively involved in things that he does research physically as well, he would go through the effort like a little secret detective. Personally I have so much respect for him that it is on my life lists to meet him one day before I die, but only until I feel worthy enough with the load of knowledge on my head to have a formal discussion with him. The section particularly about almonds in this book, shocked me a little and changed my perspective as a professional. This author gives real information in life and he stimulates readers to think deeper.
